Building houses... Building hope

It was a foggy morning when we got up  early to prepare for our one day build for Habitat for humanity Indonesia. I have been to a lot of community outreaches but this is very different from all of them. We visited Mauk, Tangerang in Indonesia and saw the community we are about to change.

The day started with greetings and orientations and stuff. We got to meet other volunteers from different walks of life, teachers, students, architects, office workers among others. The task that was assigned to us was to build the foundation of the house. We did what our Foreman asked of us and everyone was active and participative in whatever duty that was thrown at us. We were like machines, as we went off and divided ourselves on the different task. Some dug pits, some mixed cement, some welded iron rods and some carried and laid rocks.

We were also invited to perform a puppet show for the kids in the community.

The day was tiring yet fulfilling. I learned to appreciate the little things. My energy and strength was put to good use, something worthwhile.

CHANGE – a very powerful word. Who would have thought that with my hands I can make some family’s life live more comfortably. Made a difference and eventually change their life.
